Event Details
Cheyenne Ledger Art from Fort Marion, a traveling exhibit hosted by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, showcases Native American ledger art. This art form was developed in times of change and despair for many of the Plains artists known for this style. With roots in figurative plains art, its practitioners used traditional styles of documenting battles and historical events with pencil and ink on pages of old ledgers or accounting books. Some of the most prolific and best-known ledger art was created at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine, Florida where seventy-two Cheyenne, Kiowa, Comanche, Arapaho, and Caddo warriors were imprisoned between 1875 and 1878. The exhibit offers a unique insight into the lives of these artists while exploring the trauma of incarceration and its impact on art and future generations.
